Diversity Week Photo Competition

In order to celebrate Diversity Week the Commerce Student Centre is running a Diversity Week Photo Competition!

Photos must be aligned with the theme of diversity and represent your interpretation of diversity in the community, campus or Melbourne city. These can be photos of anything that you feel represents diversity, whether it be people, food or something else. Be as creative as you like!

Photos will be judged on content and theme as well as aesthetics. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize will be awarded.

The winning photo will be framed and displayed in one of the Faculty of Business and Economics buildings on campus. 1st Prize will also include a $150 voucher for the Uni Bookstore!

2nd prize will receive a $75 voucher and 3rd prize will receive a $50 voucher.

Applications will be posted to the BCom UniMelb facebook page and students will be able to vote for the top photos online.

Applications close midnight Sunday August 14th.

Diversity Week Discussion Panel!

Do you want an international career? Do you like to travel? Have you every worked in a group in class that had a mix of cultures?

Diversity is a central part in everyday life, both in work and social situations.

Dr Tine Koehler, a specialist in cross-cultural communication and international business will be mediating a discussion with representatives from SIFE, AIESEC and the Melbourne Microfinance Initiative, student clubs that run exciting projects abroad! You’ll get to hear about how issues of diversity and cross-cultural communication presented challenges and benefits to these students projects.

Ultimately the panel will give practical insights into how you can maximise your success in an international and diverse environment!

Clamble.com BCom Student Innovation

Getting organised at un!i A new website, Clamble.com, released by a Melbourne University BCom/BSci student now makes it easier for friends to catch up with each other. Clamble allows you to easily find out which of your friends are free when you are so you’ll never need to search too hard to find a friend to pass time between classes. Entrepreneurs Week 2011 Kicks Off With a Bang! (eweek.org.au)

Entrepreneurs Week is upon us again and the excitement is building since word broke that we are partnering up with AISEC and MMI to run several of our events. Since the great success over the past 4 years, with over 1000 students attending last year, Student Entrepreneurs have been turning a lot of heads with E-Week 2011 getting accolades from businesses, entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs’ Week 2011 will showcase a hit list of business moguls, successful entrepreneurs as well as up and coming entrepreneurs who will share their stories and secrets of success. E-Week 2011 will give students an opportunity to gain the right skills, meet the right people and build their confidence to just get out there and start to live their own dream! Big names to look out for are thankyou water, Wimdu, Emma and Tom, Kogan and many more

The week kicks off at the Opening Ceremony where the Innovator’s Challenge will be launched. In this challenge, competitors will be given a regular, everyday object which they need to add value in some way. Keynote for the ceremony will be Best Young Entrepreneur 2011, Wai Hong Fong, would be cordially opening the event!

International Accounting Study Program – applications now open

RMIT University and the University of Melbourne are now collaborating on an Accounting International Study Program subject available to 3rd year accounting students. The next offering is in January 2012 in Europe.

This January, the program includes visits to five European countries, ten cities and fourteen professional visits. Professional visit hosts include the International Accounting Standards Board in London, Tesco Ltd, Sainsburys, Control Risks, NYSE – Euronext, AMF, Axel Springer, German Accounting Standards Board, Siemens, BMW World, Volkswagen (Autostadt), the Warsaw School of Economics, the Australian Embassy in Poland, Nestlé and Deloitte.

Global recognition for Engineering Masters

The professional Master of Engineering programs at the Melbourne School of Engineering are the first in Australia to be granted the EUR-ACE® label at the masters level. As a result, Master of Engineering graduates are now able to work as professional engineers throughout continental Europe.

This is in addition to the Washington Accord countries that the programs are already recognised in; Australia, UK, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, Malaysia, Turkey, Taiwan and Singapore.

The Dean of Engineering, Professor Iven Mareels said that the EUR-ACE® label offered Master of Engineering graduates a competitive edge when applying for work in Europe.

“For our graduates, it will mean that their skills meet the most rigorous European and international benchmarks, and that their qualifications are recognised by top employers in Europe’s leading economies.”

The University of Melbourne has launched a new graduate program to train future leaders in energy business and technology. The new Master of Energy Systems is unique in Australia and has been designed for Bachelor of Commerce graduates, as well as those with Science or Engineering degrees.

The Master of Energy Systems has been developed in close consultation with industry, in response to rapid changes to today’s global energy sector.

There is now a growing need for graduates with cross-disciplinary skills spanning technology, business and policy to: evaluate the performance of energy systems; inform energy-related investment decisions; develop and implement policy; and manage greenhouse gas and pollutant reporting, regulation and compliance.

BCom Student Volunteers Needed for University Open Day!

On Sunday the 21st of August, The Spot will open its doors to prospective undergraduate students for the University of Melbourne Open Day.

The Faculty of Business and Economics is looking for 60 enthusiastic Bachelor of Commerce students who would like to volunteer to help out for the event.

Volunteering for Open Day is a great experience, and a wonderful way to share your story and help others like you to navigate the often confusing world of University choice and application. Plus, it would make a great addition to any resumé!

Volunteers will be there to share their experiences with visitors, answer questions and guide them to appropriate areas of the building for specific course information. Volunteers need to be students of the faculty, and must be available for two and a half hours on Sunday the 21st of August, starting at either 9:30am, 11:30am or 1:30pm. There will also be a compulsory one hour training session held in the third week of semester.

If you’re interested in taking part, all you have to do is fill out an online application form by Wednesday the 3rd of August. The application can be found here.

Deloitte Development Program
