Street Stories: Melbourne walking tours with a difference

Do you want to challenge your view of Melbourne? Street Stories is a new social enterprise which conducts walking tours of Melbourne led by people who have experience homelessness. The tours offer customers a chance to discover unseen aspects of the city as well as a unique insight into the daily experience of a homeless person in Melbourne. Street Stories aims to empower the guides coming out of homelessness by providing them with an opportunity to engage with the broader community through sharing their stories and experiences of homelessness. Street Stories is a University of Melbourne SIFE initiative. Tours will run as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival starting on 24 Sept 2011. The peer tutors in the peer writing program are students who are good writers and are available to help you with the more straightforward questions that you may have about your writing. Peter McNamara is the General Manager of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), Australia’s largest aid and advocacy organisation for asylum seekers. Prior to joining the ASRC, Peter spent 15 years as a senior manager and director in the corporate sector. He has a solid understanding of the challenges faced when moving from the corporate sector to Not For Profit sector, coupled with significant experience in management and leadership. Peter will be discussing the issues of leadership in a multi disciplinary context with an overview of his organisation and his transition to the NFP sector to set the scene.

The First Year Leadership Forum is a free, intensive half-day leadership program for first year Bachelor of Commerce students. The Forum has been developed by the Commerce Student Centre, coordinators of the subject Organisational Behaviour and the Teaching and Learning Unit.

  • meet and hear from leaders in corporate, community and government sectors
  • undertake practical workshops and activities to develop your own leadership style and build your employability skills
  • undertake exercises that directly prepare you for the compulsory Organisational Behaviour subject in second year
  • work with senior BCom students in a team environment

Who can apply?

Any first year BCom student who has not completed Organisational Behaviour prior to the beginning of Semester Two 2011.
