Be a Mentor in the First-Year BCom Network

October 5, 2012 in Opportunities: Enrich, Experience and Enhance, Professional Enhancement

Applications close Friday 26 October

Do you remember feeling daunted when you started at University? Would you like to be a mentor and help new students settle into life in the Faculty of Business and Economics?

We are currently recruiting mentors to the First-Year BCom Network so if you answered “yes” to the questions above, we would love to hear from you.

Mentors facilitate small groups of new first year students during the first weeks of semester. Your role as a volunteer mentor is to help new students adjust to Uni life. Mentors arrange interesting group activities to run during each group meeting, take mentees around campus and the surrounding area, introduce mentees to the range of services available both in the Faculty and across the University and provide tips about how to get the most out of the first year University experience.

Mentors should:

  • have a genuine interest in assisting new students settle into University;
  • have completed at least one year of study within the Faculty of Business and Economics;
  • be able to attend a three hour training session which will be scheduled during Orientation;
  • commit to weekly meetings, with a co-mentor, of the mentoring group over the lunch period once a week for four weeks during semester one.

If you are interested to take part in the First-Year BCom Network, please email your cover letter (which should outline your reason for wishing to be a mentor) and a copy of your CV before Friday 26 October 2012 to Marika Benetti-Hille (m.benetti@unimelb.edu.au), Commerce Student Centre.
