March 13, 2013 in Clubs and Societies, Opportunities: Enrich, Experience and Enhance

The High Tea – Meet & Greet was the launch event of 85 Broads Melbourne. Held on the 5th of March at the Student Lounge of the the Spot Building, the event brought together past and present members of the club. Over some incredible treats and refreshments, the girls made several new friends, stepped out of their comfort zones and enjoyed some delicious treats created by the committee themselves.

There was an assortment of delicacies including chocolate brownies, red velvet cupcakes, chocolate cake, tarts and various other sweet treats. The committee really put an effort in making the event elegant and inviting. The event was a real success! Students particularly from first and second years, came to the Student Lounge which looked like the Mad Hatter’s tea party but poised, elegant and lady like.

SAMM Event Review: The Art of Networking

SAMM Event Review: The Art of Networking

Did you know that Networking accounts for about 87% of business in the market place? At such a high figure, it is highly essential that every student be equipped with the necessary skills that will carry them through the course of their employment and career. As a wrap up of the semester, the Students’ Association of Management and Marketing (SAMM) organised a networking event for students to learn all about networking and then put it into practice.

Dressed up in preppy business attire on the evening of 17 May, a group of over 40 students presented their tickets at the door and excitedly found their seats in the lecture theatre. One by one, professionals from the industry including Talent2, Deloitte, Forethought Research, Australian Human Resource Institute, AT Kearney, Venuemob, Australian Marketing Institute and the Faculty of Business and Economics streamed into the lecture theatre and also found their seats among students. To kick off the event, our President and founder, Sigourney Young, introduced SAMM to our guests and the speaker of the day, Sacha Koffman, Program Director, Talent2.

Sacha touched on two main points, namely to know the market and know yourself. Acquiring information about the market requires seeking for answers to questions such as what industries are out there, what they are doing, who is someone in my network I know there and how can to make contact with them. Knowing yourself requires soul searching into the impression you would like to leave and remembered and other qualities of yourself. He summed up networking as an ongoing and integral part of everyday activity and homework is needed before approaching your target.

Soon after the talk, both students and professionals made their way up to the student lounge to put networking into practice over refreshments. Equipped with an introduction to networking and a shiny glass of wine or beverage, conversations sprang up all over the room and it was not long before everyone who stepped in was engaged in some form of social interaction. The night ended with the announcement of the winner of our semester prize – one lucky SAMM member who attended all of our events this semester walked away earning the unique chance to job-shadow with Brooke Young, the Director of Marketing and Commercial Engagement at the University of Melbourne. Another prize was also given away for the winner of the raffle for the evening. Congratulations to both winners!

SAMM would like to thank everyone who attended and made this event a great success. We would also like to thank our speaker, Sacha Koffman and all industry professionals who took up time to give valuable insights to our members and the Department of Management and Marketing for their ongoing support.

Look out for us next semester for more exciting events on Management & Marketing!

In Review: 85 Broads Meet n Greet/Buddy Program

April 19, 2012 in Clubs and Societies

The first event for the year 2012, the Meet n Greet, held on the 8th of March at the Jim Potter Room went successfully, to say the least. The room turned out to be the perfect location for the attendees to come after class and the food, drinks and music provided, gave the perfect opportunity for them to relax and socialise with fellow members.

The numbers that attended surpassed all expectations we had. They ranged from first years to masters students from a variety of faculties, presenting the perfect mix, allowing each individual to find out about different opportunities and course pathways as well as build new relationships.

Through a small presentation, we were able to further inform them about our goal as a club and our plan for the rest of the year. The enthusiasm of the attendees and their interest in the event calendar expressed that the Melbourne Chapter of 85 Broads will have a successful year. This was further supported by the interest we have been able to gain for the upcoming event ‘5 Habits of a Highly Successful Woman’.

The Meet n Greet exceeded all expectations and was deemed a success by the committee as well as those who attended the event and we look forward to our next event.

Student Entrepreneurs IdeaPitch Competition

September 15, 2011 in Clubs and Societies

Victor Hugo once said “there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” These wise words were spoken again, this time by entrepreneur Glen Carlson, at the launch of the IdeaPitch Competition 2011.

The launch, which took place on September 1st, 2011 at the University of Melbourne, marked the beginning of the IdeaPitch Competition, which will run until October 12th, 2011. The competition aims to provide a platform for aspiring students to test their ‘pitching’ abilities and promote their startup to prospective investors.

The event began with a short speech from Marty Drill, CEO of Get Started. Marty emphasized passion as a driving force in an entrepreneur. Following Marty, Glen Carlson delivered an inspirational speech that touched on various topics of entrepreneurship, ending with ‘7 secrets to make your pitch STAND OUT’. The launch concluded with an idea generation workshop ran by Amir Nissen, founder of Student Entreprenuers Inc.

In addition to 20 guests VIPs from organizations such as NAB, Get Started and Pitcher Partners, more than 100 students attended the launch, with more than 80 of those signing up to participate in the competition.

IdeaPitch 2011 will conclude with a closing ceremony held at Match Bar & Grill (249 Little Lonsdale St), from 7:00PM to 9.30PM on the12th of October 2011.  It would feature top entries from the competition as they vie for the top prizes worth over $15,000 in total. Anyone interested in entrepreneurship is encouraged to attend; an event not to be missed.
