Wilfred Prest Travelling Fellowship – Applications now open

TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP

 

Notice to all students or graduates who will be undertaking postgraduate studies at an overseas university or research institution.

Available through the generosity of Mrs Marjorie Prest, and funded by the Wilfred Prest Fund, the Wilfred Prest Travelling Fellowship is available annually according to the following terms:

 

1. The Fellowship is valued at $11,100 in 2012/2013.

2. The Fellowship is open to students or graduates of the University of Melbourne who will be undertaking postgraduate studies in the field of Economics at an overseas university or research institution within the period between July 2012 and June 2013.

3. Applicants must be completing a degree specialising in Economics at the University in 2012 (Bachelor, Honours, Master or PhD), or be an Economics graduate of the University.

4. The applicant can be of no more than 27 years of age at the time of award.

5. The tenure of the scholarship is for one year, and is payable in two instalments upon confirmation of acceptance and enrolment at the nominated overseas institution.

6. An extension of the Fellowship may be granted for a further term of one year, on the recommendation of the selection committee.

7. The Fellowship may be held concurrently with another award.

 

Applications are invited from students or graduates who meet the above criteria.

Program Details:

The “Brain World Cup” is a Quiz TV Show in order to decide “The King of Quiz” in the world, which is broadcasted on Fuji Television. Fuji Television is one of the major commercial TV broadcasters in Japan. In Australian TV terms, the broadcaster would be the equivalent of Channel Seven, Nine or Ten.

Previous participating teams were various prestigious universities such as Harvard University, Tokyo University, Seoul National University and University of Oxford. 

Categories of the questions are varied: Maths, Science, Physics, History, Geography, Art, Finance, Film, Economics and Cartoon etc…

Although this footage is aired in Japanese, the competitors could hear the questions in their own language.

Procedure and Schedules

1. Pre-election in Melbourne: 1 or 2days between the 10th and the 15th of June 2012. The qualifiers (top four students) will be invited to Japan to represent the team of Australia for the final match of the quiz show. 

 

2. Final Match in Tokyo, Japan: Takes place the 7th or 8th of July 2012, participants would be required to arrive in Japan 2days prior to the competition.

Day 1: Arrive in Japan

Day 2: Rehearsal for the competition

Day 3: Final Match

Day 4: day off

Day 5: Back to Melbourne

 

Participants of the Final Match will receive the following:

Return flight tickets Melbourne to Tokyo, accommodation in Japan and a food allowance in Japan ($200/person).

Prizes on offer for the The Malaysia-Australia Business Council (MABC) INTERNSHIP COMPETITION!

Entries are now open for the 2012 Malaysia Australia Business Council (MABC) Internship Competition.

The competition is open to Australian and Malaysian students currently enrolled in an institute of Higher Education or VET. The prize consists of an internship in a member company for approximately one (1) month, in addition to a return airfare from Australia.

The prize is awarded to the student who submits the most convincing and engaging presentation on the topic via essay or storyboard mode. 

TOPIC:

The Australian Prime Minister, The Honourable Julia Gillard has commissioned a white paper to guide government policy through the so-called “Asian Century”, stating that “Rapid growth in much of Asia will change the social and economic, strategic and environmental order of our world…”

In considering this statement, please respond to the following questions:

  • In what way/s might you expect your internship in Malaysia to prepare you for the Asian Century?
  • What might be some of the “social and economic, strategic and environmental” issues that we need to be prepared for?
  • In your opinion, what are the skill sets required to meet the challenges of the Asian Century?
