The ‘Transition and Orientation Programs’ division of Student Services’ are currently seeking energetic, friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable students to volunteer for the 2013 Host Program. All students are encouraged apply – this is a great way to help new students settle into University life and also provides the opportunity for you to develop your leadership and organisational skills.

There are a number of other benefits to becoming an Orientation Host,

including:

  • Developing demonstrable and transferable skills in communication, leadership, time management, organisation and group facilitation, which will add value to your CV.

Volunteering and getting involved

Each semester, International Student Services (ISS) train volunteers and student mentors to assist us with various events. Both local and international students are very welcome to be a part of our events. Volunteering helps you develop teamwork and communication skills. You get to meet people from around the world, form friendships and share your experiences with others. International Student Services is currently looking for volunteers for our global pre-departure briefings and 2013 Orientation and Transition activities.

Global Volunteering Opportunity

Each semester, International Student Services runs pre-departure briefings in five different countries (China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and Singapore).
We are currently seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist throughout the month of June by facilitating small group discussions with new students to the University of Melbourne.
This is a great opportunity for students travelling home during the mid year break to engage with International Student Services, the International Office Network and students preparing or considering study at the University.

Please note you must be in the country at the date and time of the briefing to volunteer as travel costs are not provided.

Microfinance in Africa

MMI and the Africa Club present: “Microfinance in Africa”. This conference focuses on microfinance efforts in the African region.

The event will feature prominent guest speakers including:

  • Ian Howie, former UN Director of Human Resources under Kofi Annan and current UN Representative For Papua New Guinea
  • Simon Griffiths, social entrepreneur and former Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Engineering student at The University of Melbourne
  • Jolynna Sinanan, academic researcher and current PhD candidate in Development Studies at The University of Melbourne

A networking session will follow the conference, where you will have the opportunity to chat to our guest speakers over some light refreshments.

Youth-Led Organisations – Why and How you can be involved

Are you interested in youth leadership opportunities and becoming involved in or starting a youth-led organisation? What skills are required? How can engagement with a youth organisation enhance your professional skills and personal development? Who can you contact?

Rick Newnham (Co-founder, Left Right Think-Tank) will present and facilitate a lively discussion with a panel of key leaders of youth-led organisations in areas such as public policy (Left Right Think-Tank), climate change (Australian Youth Climate Coalition), global poverty (Y-Gap) and media (SYN Media).  The session will be followed by networking drinks to enable you to discuss questions and opportunities further with panel members.
